Design, write, edit and publish multiple technical manuals that address the needs of network storage system administrators. Work closely with key information sources and customers within Dot Hill and at Fortune 500 companies to define information requirements, obtain necessary information, organize and format multiple documents, and lead reviews. Coordinate formal document production including file format conversions, archiving, and web posting. Develop extensive, comprehensive online help systems. Work on both new product introductions and periodic sustaining releases. Contribute to decisions about new technology adaptation including XML, single-sourcing and content management systems. Research and understand RAID storage technologies including Fibre Channel, SAS, and iSCSI as necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Developing information for emerging product functionality from meetings, specifications, and interviews with developers and test personnel.
  • Planning, scheduling, and producing formal customer documentation to established standards, using defined style guides and processes.
  • Determining appropriate approaches for gathering and presenting hardware, software, configuration, and best practices information.
  • Developing new manuals, guides, and online help for new products as needed.
  • Maintaining existing documentation sets in response to bug fixes and functionality enhancements.
  • Coordinating technical publications project scheduling and completion with Dot Hill and key customer program managers.
  • Developing and following documentation and content plans, schedules, resource allocation plans, and budgets.
  • Regularly reporting documentation progress and issues to Dot Hill and key customer management.
  • Participating in cross-training with other tech pubs team members.

Requirements

Minimum of five years of professional technical publications work in technical areas, with computer and network system administration experience preferable. Strong working knowledge of Adobe FrameMaker. Experience with XML editing tools desirable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • BA or BS, preferably in English, Technical Communications, Journalism, or a technical field such as Computer Science.
  • Technical Communications coursework or certificate desirable.

Desired Knowledge:

  • Principles of organizing and delivering information so readers can easily get to the information they want without unnecessary navigation and searching.
  • Writing concisely to minimize translation expense.
  • XML.
  • Structured FrameMaker.
  • RAID array configuration and management software.
  • Acrobat, Photoshop and Illustrator or comparable raster- and vector-graphics editing software.
  • Multiple operating systems including Windows, Linux, other UNIX.
  • Hardware and software product development life cycles.
  • Bug tracking software.
  • Test and verification cycles.
  • Project planning.
  • Microsoft Office and Visio.
  • Configuration management systems such as Agile.
  • Content management systems such as Vasont.
  • Technical publications processes and style guidelines used at large computer systems companies such as Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard.
